The never-ending salad!

This evening I got in touch with my French roots while celebrating my friend Heather's birthday at Bistro Le Coq. And by "roots" I'm referring to the one-tenth of me that is French (along with the English, Dutch, German, and Irish from my mom's side). I had actually passed by this restaurant earlier today and made a mental note to check it out in the near future, so it was a delightful surprise when I found out that this was our dining destination!

I ordered the duck confit salad which was a mixture of roasted hazelnuts, mesclun & baby arugula, blue cheese dressing, and pulled duck confit. I wasn't sure if it would fill me so I shared some pommes frites with my roomie Helen.

I admit that when dinner was served I took one look at it and thought, "there's no way on this green earth that THIS salad will fill me". What can I say...I was raised in a family where quantity was just as important as quality :P. However, the duck confit proved me wrong! It was literally a never-ending salad and each bite was full of rich flavour. The pommes frites were also tasty and reminded me of hickory sticks. But I'm definitely glad that I had it to split because they were a little heavy!

For dessert I satisfied my chocolate cravings with the souffle, served with grand marnier cream. Please excuse the disgusting photo quality below. I was being stubborn and didn't want to use the flash. The picture does not do the dessert justice (a real camera is on my wish list). All I can say is that it was delicious and that every drop of the 1/2 cup of cream was used ;).

Others in the group had different outlets for indulgence, i.e.

Leslie's cheese plate

Leila & Heather's tasty drinks

Cec's espresso (how this girl savoured her drink over 10 minutes, I will never know!)

My only reservation about Bistro Le Coq was the waiting time. It didn't seem too busy at the restaurant yet it took over an hour before we were seated (granted, we were a large party). The time between when our orders were taken and when we were served also seemed longer than average. It really is a shame because the restaurant had a quaint french atmosphere and the menu offered a lot of unique dishes.

But all in all, it was a lovely meal with good friends, celebrating a great birthday.

Now, please excuse me as I sleep my food baby away!
