The beauty of ultrasound

Oh! Hello there bladder! Nice to finally meet you after these 20 odd years!

Can you spot my bladder in the ultrasound image above? Looking at ultrasounds can be a bit tricky at first and I am by no stretch of the imagination a pro yet! But I'll give you a hint:

It's inside the pink box. Need another hint? Water shows up as black on ultrasound.

Yup! You got it! The circle marks the spot! To put things into perspective, we're looking into my abdomen, with my tummy at the top of the square and my back at the bottom.

Today I volunteered to help some emergency residents practice ultrasound techniques. I was asked to come with a full bladder but it ended up being a little TOO FULL! It was squishing the rest of my internal organs (don't worry, they're doing alright...I've calmed them down).

The arrow points to my squished uterus. Poor thing.

Other than the feeling of someone pressing on your bladder when you gotta go, I actually had a lot of fun! In the back of my mind I was secretly hoping they'd find some structural abnormality (sick, I know) but as far as they could see everything was in tip top shape! Yay!

Would you ever be a volunteer patient for med students or residents to practice on?

  1. i would totally be a volunteer to help my friends!! i dont have any issues with needles or anything, so as long as they dont critically injure me, Id let them do pretty much whatever :)
